These nymphs and egg patterns are all designed for steelhead and salmon in the Great Lakes region and are the patterns that we use here in Michigan.  The method that we use to fish these flies for steelhead/salmon is either by the use of a floating line & strike indictor or a deep water nymphing technique using a running line and split shot.  These methods can be fished most effectively with 9' to 10' fly rods.  Typically on the larger rivers the long rods are used. For steelhead 7wt. or 8wt. and for salmon 9wt. are most common.

The hook size of each fly is our most commonly used size.  If you do want patterns in different sizes than listed you can special order them by email at sales@michiganstreamside.com or by phone at 989-848-5983.  Typically special orders can be shipping in ten days.

The above row is four of our most popular hex nymph patterns.  The Hexigenia (some times called a wiggler) is the largest mayfly in Michigan and is found in all of our steelhead streams in large numbers.  With the bug being large and in big numbers it's one of the top producing nymphs for steelhead.  During the cold months (November through March) this would be considered are go to fly on the lower Au Sable River.

The above row is 3 of our most popular stone fly nymph patterns and our top fry pattern.  Stone flies are very common in our steelhead streams and are always a top producing fly.  During warm ups in March look for heavy hatches of little black stones on many of our rivers.  Black stones are also a go to pattern during higher water in the spring time - black will show up well in dirty water.

Egg patterns are very popular flies here in the Great Lakes region for  steelhead and salmon.  In the fall salmon enter many of our rivers to make their spawning runs up stream.  This is a huge source of eggs throughout many of our rivers and makes up a big portion of the river steelheads diet.  A good way to fish these egg patterns is in combination with the nymphs.  Fish eggs and nymphs about 2' apart.  For steelhead egg patterns are top producer during fall, winter and spring.  When rivers are high and dirty use larger and brighter patterns.   Low and clear go with small and pale colors.

The hook size of each fly is our most commonly used size.  If you do want patterns in different sizes than listed you can special order them by email at sales@michiganstreamside.com or by phone at 989-848-5983.  Typically special orders can be shipping in ten days.
